Missionary Ridge Camp 63 - Minutes of Meeting - October 27, 2007

At 1:15pm, the meeting was called to order by Camp Commander James Fletcher. This month's location was courtesy of camp member Bill Shackleford, who graciously allowed the meeting to take place in his place of business: Mountain City Mercantile, 124 Gordon Street, Chickamauga, GA.

Present were: James Fletcher, Robert Dobbs, Mark Kemp, Mark Steele, Wes Davis, William Massey, William Shackleford and guest Harvey Scarborough.

Opening Prayer was offered by James Fletcher.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by James Fletcher.

Last month's minutes: Commander Fletcher read the minutes from the last meeting. There were no changes or additions.

Commander Fletcher read a letter from Secretary/ Treasurer Charles Engle who was unable to attend today's meeting due to recent surgery.

OLD BUSINESS:

Carried over from the last meeting was the subject of the graveside service near Sparta, Tn. It was decided that 13 soldiers would be needed. Four for an honor guard, Two with flags, two with muskets, seven with muskets, a chaplain ans one officer. It was hoped that others could be enlisted for this event. Wes Davis to check with his re-enactment group to see if any can help. The tentative date for the service is Saturday, December 8, 2007.

Sons of Veterans Reserve: Discussion was resumed from last month whether or not to re-activate participation in the SVR. The Sons of Veterans reserve (SVR) is the ceremonial uniformed military component of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). Several members expessed interest in doing so; however, it was decided to consult with Camp Sec/Treas Charles Engle to get his opinion and knowledge of the SVR as it exists today. It is hoped that he will be able to return soon to the Camp's duties.

NEW BUSINESS:

Battle of Missionary Ridge reenactment at the Sequoyah Cavern area in Alabama. This reenactment will take place November 3, 4 2007.

Veterans Day Parade in Dalton, Ga. The Camp usually has several members to participate by helping to lead the march in this parade to be held on Saturday, November 10th. Those that can participate are encouraged to assemble in the Dalton College parking lot between 9am to 930 am since the parade starts at 10 am.

Christmas Parade in Trenton, Ga.: Participants are desired for a similiar role in this parade to be held on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 6 pm.

Graveside ceremony at Sparta, Tn.: We have picked December 8, 2007 as a tentative date to perform this service. More on this later.

Camp Christmas Party: The members discussed the upcoming Christmas Party. It was decided to hold it on Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Wally's restaurant in East Ridge. Mark Kemp stated that he would make reservations for the Camp.

Camp dues: Camp members were reminded to pay their dues again for the coming year. Renewal dues are $22 and new member dues are $29.

Officer nominations: Commander Fletcher stated it was time to consider nominees for election for the Camp posts. After a round table discussion, it was stated that all current officers were willing to serve again if elected. The current officers were so nominated. The election will be held during the Christmas party in December.

Tennessee Division Encampment in Montgomery, Al: A notice from Senior Vice Comander William Butler was read. It invited this Camp to attend the encampment to be held January 26, 2008.

Closing Prayer: The closing prayer was given by Bill Massey.

Adjourn: There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 2:50 pm.
