Missionary Ridge Camp #63 began the
Memorial Day evening with a traditional stop at the James Watkins Cemetery in the middle of the
Old Mill Trace Subdivision near Ringgold, Georgia. Several camp members present the colors to honor
this north Georgian who chose to fight for the North rather than the South. This took extra courage
considering the pro-secession feelings of most of his neighbors!
Below, we see the rather worn condition of Watkin's marker. ![]() |

At right, Camp Commander Mark Kemp read portions of Watkins' will which indicated that after the War, he was able to etch
out a fairly good living as a farmer. After this ceremony, the Camp held its May meeting at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in East Ridge. Our next memorial took us to the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery to honor two Union soldiers buried there. |
