Commander Fletcher stated that the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Ider, Alabama is having its 150th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, September 18, 2011, at 1:00 PM Central Time. Along with its own history, the Church will have a Civil War Honor Guard as part of the ceremonies to also acknowledge the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War and to remember the fact that Union Major General Alexander M. McCook's Twentieth Corps marched through the area during the Chickamauga Campaign. Commander Fletcher requested participants from the Sons of Union Veterans to join a unit of Confederate soldiers that will be present. It is anticipated that the combined group will fire a three-volley salute. Several in the Camp expressed an interest in helping.

NEW MEMBER INITIATION: At this time, Commander Fletcher introduced new member applicant, Mr. James "Jim" Burran to the Camp. Mr. Burran's qualification to join is through his great-great-grandfather, Samuel Van Nuys of Franklin, Indiana who was initially in the 7th Indiana Infantry. When the offer came to be an officer to an all black regiment, he volunteered. He was made a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th U. S. Colored Troops Regiment and later became a captain. He fought in the Eastern Theater and it was during the Petersburg Campaign that he was killed in action on September 29, 1864 at the age of 23 years. At right, Commander Fletcher pins the camp membership medal to complete the ceremony.
