March 2013 Meeting
March 2013 Meeting
James Watkins Flag Update: Commander Mark Kemp reported that the flag for James Watkins should be purchased in the next few days to be available for this Memorial Day's ceremony. He hoped to get a check from Treasurer Charles Engle; however, due to an injury in Charlie's family, he was unable to attend today's meeting. Commander Kemp said he would contact Charlie to get the check by mail.

Commander Kemp related several things of interest regarding the flags displayed by Ringgold. It was hoped that the Camp would be able to dedicate this flag on Memorial Day. Discussion regarding that day's events revealed that due to anticipated warmer weather, and health issues among several Camp members, the ceremony at the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery would be replaced by the Watkins flag ceremony this year. A later starting time of 5 PM (normally 4 PM) is anticipated this year.

Frank Harned Update: Bob Dobbs reported that he hoped to visit with Camp 63 founder, Frank Harned, who now resides in Florida. A series of strokes has kept Frank under the weather for several years. It was hoped that Bob's visit would find Frank doing better.

Department of Tennessee 2013 Encampment: Harvey Scarborough reported that he and Charles Engle, on behalf of Camp #63) attended this year's Department Encampment at the Read House on March 23rd. Attendance was somewhat poor as the weather had been very wet through the previous night. Many reports were given; Charlie reported on behalf of our Camp.

2013 Memorial Day Ceremonies: In addition to that mentioned above regarding the James Watkins Flag Ceremony, several Camp members stated that this year (and perhaps future years), they might not be able to walk all over the National Cemetery following Torchlight Tour leader James Ogden. Age and/or health issues are affecting several in the Camp to the point of curtailing outdoor activities. It was hoped that most everyone could attend the initial opening remarks prior to the group heading out on the tour.

NEXT MEETING: It was decided to have the next meeting at the East Ridge Cracker Barrel Restaurant on Monday, May 27, 2013 at approximately 7 PM following the James Watkins Flag Ceremony and prior to the Torchlight Tour at the National Cemetery. Members were urged to be in the parking lot at 5 PM to group together for a carpool.

BENEDICTION: Chaplain Massey gave the Benediction.

ADJOURN: There being no further business to come before the camp, Commander Kemp adjourned the meeting at approximately 3:01 PM.

Respectively submitted,
Harvey Scarborough, Recording Secretary
