Missionary Ridge Camp #63
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
Department of Tennessee (including Alabama)

February 14, 2015 Meeting February 14, 2015 Meeting Those attending the meeting met Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Wally's Restaurant in East Ridge, TN and ate lunch prior to the start of the meeting.

Those present: Mark Kemp, Jeffrey Webb, Mark Miller, Wes Davis, Chip Brown, Harvey Scarborough, Mark Steele, Alma Webb and two guests.

Call to Order: Commander Jeff Webb called the meeting to order at 1:56 PM.

Opening Prayer: Past Camp Commander (PCC) Mark Kemp led the group in prayer.

Pledge of Allegiance: PCC Kemp led the group in the Pledge to the United States Flag.

Old Business: There was no old business to discuss.

New Business: Tax Status Changes - PCC Kemp stated that the IRS has changed some rules regarding tax exempt organizations like veterans' camps. The National SUVCW issued General Orders #15 regarding this issue. He stated that he would get with Secretary-Treasurer Charlie Engle to make sure the proper papers are filed on behalf of this camp.

2015 Dues are Due - It was noted that Camp dues are technically past due since they should be paid by January 1 of each new year. A general discussion was had regarding the National SUVCW and that new memberships are $40 plus a $10 application fee. The general thought was that the Camp wishes to keep dues as low as possible; however, if the National SUVCW has recently increased dues (no one knew at the time of this meeting), then the $27 we request of our Camp's membership may be less than what we forward to the National.

It was decided to increase dues to $30 beginning 2015. Motion was made and seconded to increase the dues to $30 effective January 1, 2015. After further discussion, the motion to increase dues to $30 annually was unanimously approved.

Everyone present was encouraged to mail their dues to Charles Engle at:

Cemetery in Alton Park - The Webbs reported that a small cemetery in Alton Park was discovered to have the graves of two Union soldiers and one Confederate soldier buried there. Additional information about the soldiers has and is being researched. It was discussed that both our Camp, and perhaps the Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp #3 could honor these soldiers in an appropriate service in the near future.

It was noted that a local resident, who observed the Webbs walking in the cemetery, found out that they were interested in the historic preservation of the cemetery and these graves in particular. The resident got to work clearing off the cemetery and made it much more presentable for future visitors.

It was discussed that, even if the SCV Camp did not participate, this Camp would plan a service for the two Union soldiers. A date for the event was discussed and the day Saturday, April 11, 2015 was decided upon. It was also mentioned that we could hold a regular meeting that same day as well.

Next Meeting: Commander Webb encouraged those present to attend the April 11th service and April meeting. Address, directions, and the actual time for the meeting and the cemetery event will be announced later.

Adjourn: There being no further business to come before the camp, Commander Webb adjourned the meeting at 2:42 PM.

Closing Prayer: PCC Kemp concluded the meeting with a closing prayer.

Respectively submitted,
Harvey Scarborough, Recording Secretary
