Call to Order: Commander Sims called the meeting to order at approximately 1:15 PM.
Pledge of Allegiance: Commander Sims led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.
Opening Prayer: Commander Sims, following SUVCW meeting instructions, led the group in the opening prayer.
Name Badges: Commander Sims had available name badges for members to begin wearing during our meetings. These were passed out to members present at today's meeting. He said they would be collected at the end of this meeting to assure safe storage and availability at the next meeting.
Last Meeting's Minutes: Minutes of the last meeting were published on the website. There were no corrections or additions.
Treasurer's Report: Secretary-Treasurer Mark Kemp gave the Treasurer's Report. He stated that the Camp's balance at the last meeting was $1,307.70. He reported that since that meeting, one deposit of $35 was made, and two checks, one for $50 and another for $447 (written to the SUVCW national for their portion of our member's dues). The balance is now $945.70.
Also, he reported that even though he filed Form 990-N back on March 8 of this year for 2016, there seems to be a problem in final acceptance of the return. Mark said he would follow up on the situation in hopes of getting it resolved soon.
2017 SUVCW National Encampment: Commander Sims stated that he is still planning to attend the 136th National Encampment of the SUVCW in Lansing, Michigan August 10 - 13, 2017. More information is available through the Department of Michigan website:
Wreaths Across America: Nick Norwood reported that the Wreaths Across America program is pretty much set to take place Saturday, December 16 at either 11 AM or noon. Those present indicated a willingness to attend the ceremony at the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery downtown. Representatives for both the North and South will be participating.
Membership Brochures: Nick Norwood also reported that the membership brochures were ordered and have been received. They will be made available for distribution in the near future.
Patriotic Instructor: Nick Norwood stated that he recently presented an award on behalf of the Camp at a Junior ROTC event. He hoped that this type of good will and student recognition would further knowledge of this Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He said beginning early next year, the Camp will continue this program in the area schools.
Nick also stated that a $25 donation on behalf of the Camp was recently given to the Boy Scouts of America. The funds will help pay for water and snacks that are made available to the scouts participating in the annual Memorial Day weekend flag decoration at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Camp Website: Harvey Scarborough reported that he is getting out of the website maintenance business and that this Camp's website is the only one remaining that he maintains. He would like to pass the job along to someone else who is more "tech savy" and who can make the website more compatible to the various size viewing devices used today. He uses the old HTML programming that isn't user friendly. Further, he said he has done the job since 2006 at his own expense and questions whether or not it is useful considering the increased use of other media venues such as Facebook and Twitter.
It was opened up for general discussion. Several present stated they preferred accessing Camp information via the website and actively promote it. Others preferred the Camp's Facebook page as updates are readily made available without having to look up the website.
David McMahon stated an interest in website maintenance and agreed to look into other ways to have a website presence. Harvey stated that the fees for the domain name are $20.17/year and website hosting is $95.88/year. Both will need to be paid in January for the 2018 year. They both expire in early February 2018.
Commander Sims tabled further discussion until the November 4th meeting at which time David McMahon will update the Camp on visual friendly alternatives.
Program: We were unable to have a program speaker this month. However, Nick Norwood reminded those present that today is the anniversary of the Battle of Mobile Bay (August 5, 1864). Admiral David Farragut is credited with this famous declaration: "Damn the torpedos [minefield], full speed ahead!"
Next Meeting: The next meeting will be held here at Wally's Restaurant, Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 1 PM.
Adjourn: There being no further business to come before the camp, Commander Sims adjourned the meeting at approximately 2:50 PM.
Remembering Union Veterans: Those present stated the name of a Union veteran, whether a relative or not, to be honored at this time.
Benediction: Commander Sims led the Camp in the following benediction - "Peace be to the ashes of our Union dead and honor be their memory."
Closing Prayer: Commander Sims concluded the meeting with a closing prayer.
